Gaines is a 6'4" point guard / shooting guard. As a junior he is averaging 36 points per game. Donovan plays a crucial role on offense for his high school team, consistently scoring in double digits while also helping with rebounds and playmaking. 

In 2025, he reached a milestone by scoring his 1,000th career point at SFA Academy.

His teammates call him Don-Don and his favorite team is the New York Knicks.

Teams representing Atlanta, Florida, Arizona, and Chicago participated in the three-day Showcase, competing for the opportunity to qualify for the March Contenders Conference championship.
